Silence of the Apoc: Tales from the Zombie Apocalypse<\/h1>\n

Nobody knew how it began.<\/p>\n

Nobody knew how it would end.<\/p>\n

All they knew was that they had to survive another day… and another night.

“Yakuza Dead”<\/h4>\n

Originally intended to be part of my upcoming novel\u00a0World War Dead<\/em>, the dark humor of the dialog and character situations did not fit the overall theme. Tannhauser Press was kind enough to include it in their anthology as a stand alone short story .<\/p>\n

Two rival yakuza clans and a horde of the living dead are the center point of this gruesome, action packed tale of revenge and escape, which is mainly set in a ten-story hotel on the outskirts of Tokyo.<\/p>\n

Yakuza boss Kudo is out for revenge over the betrayal of his former assistant chief, who stole a cure to a zombie virus and broke ranks and formed his own organization. When Kudo makes a daring midnight raid on Tohno headquarters to retrieve the cure, a shootout follows and Tohno and his group are captured. Before Kudo Clan can execute their captives and get back the cure, they are confronted with Tokyo being bombed and the dead rising.<\/p>\n

Forced to forge an uneasy alliance, Tohno must help his rival get to the lobby in order to survive. But Boss Tohno has no intention of allowing his adversaries to escape, and plots to strike back before they reach ground level.<\/p>\n

As the chaos in the penthouse suite was happening, Haruto and Yuuta returned to the reception area, Yuuta walking towards the elevator.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYuuta. Don\u2019t be stupid,\u201d Haruto told him.\u00a0\u201cThere are no zombies.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But Yuuta didn\u2019t listen.\u00a0Not that he believed zombies were in Hachioji, but something had frightened the girl enough to make her hysterical and want out of the hotel. Even if it was only\u00a0what\u00a0she may have suffered from witnessing their raid on the penthouse suit, he would be remiss in his duty if he did not at least look in the elevator car.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe need to make sure,\u201d he said to Haruto.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The door opened\u00a0to an elevator full of blood and dead\u00a0topless\u00a0strippers. Squatting on the floor\u00a0was\u00a0Mr. Tada.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Yutta was shocked. He pointed at the man and yelled, \u201cZombie!\u201d Not realizing that his loud voice would draw its attention.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mr. Tada turned\u00a0around. Blood ran\u00a0from his mouth as he chewed. He looked\u00a0at Yuuta and rose.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cA\u00a0zombie! Do something!\u201d he told Haruto.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Isamu\u00a0surveyed the carnage, and then stepped to one of the dead zombies and kicked it in the head.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cUseless government. They can’t even keep us safe. We suffer because of the quarantine and the virus still comes,\u201d he angrily conveyed, kicking the zombie again. \u201cI hate zombies.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A\u00a0loud rumble of helicopters from outside passed overhead, heading west.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A noise\u00a0came\u00a0from the doorway. It\u00a0was\u00a0Yoshio.\u00a0Isamu\u00a0turned\u00a0with his pistol in hand as zombie Yoshio lunged\u00a0towards him.\u00a0He pulled the trigger.\u00a0The shot impacted\u00a0Yoshio\u2019s\u00a0face and exploded\u00a0his skull,\u00a0sending brain matter scattering.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Zombie Yoshio\u00a0fell\u00a0at\u00a0the clan leader\u2019s\u00a0feet.\u00a0He\u00a0looked\u00a0down at the young man, and\u00a0shook\u00a0his head with displeasure, and then turned\u00a0his attention to Tohno.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Pointing at his former assistant,\u00a0Isamu\u00a0said,\u00a0\u201cThis is your fault.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMy<\/i>\u00a0fault?\u201d Gaku questioned.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYes,\u201d Isamu told him, and then cocked the trigger on his pistol and pointed it at the man\u2019s face. \u201cIf you hadn\u2019t betrayed me, then my men would still be alive.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re dead because of ARS,\u201d Gaku\u00a0corrected\u00a0him.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNo. It\u00a0is because of your betrayal. We could all be at Nin Jin House drinking. But because of your theft, Clan Kudo had to come here.\u201d\u00a0Isamu turned to his\u00a0assistant chief, ordering,\u00a0\u201cPut bullets in the heads of all the dead. I don\u2019t want any more zombies.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As Saito,\u00a0assisted by Kimura, began to shoot, Tohno Clan\u00a0Senior Advisor\u00a0Kakusabaru\u00a0Kitagawa rose\u00a0behind\u00a0Isamu.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBoss!\u201d Hizaki warned, and then jumped at zombie Kitagawa, knocking\u00a0it to the ground. Kitagawa bit into Hizaki\u2019s hand as\u00a0he\u00a0attempted to\u00a0keep it at bay.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In a single motion\u00a0Enforcer Matsumoto\u00a0swung\u00a0his\u00a0wakizashi\u00a0across the back of zombie Kitagawa\u2019s neck. Its head lopped\u00a0off and the torso collapsed\u00a0onto Hizaki.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Isamu\u00a0looked\u00a0down at the decapitated head, its eyes rolling\u00a0up at him, gnashing its teeth.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cStupid Tohno zombie. Not so tough now,\u201d\u00a0Isamu\u00a0told the head, and then kicked it\u00a0across the room.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The clan leader saw the bleeding hand of his accountant. He gestured to Akira\u00a0Kimura, and then reached down to the man to help him stand, and as he did he said, \u201cI promise to take care of your family.\u201d Akira shot\u00a0Yasuo Hizaki\u00a0in the head.\u00a0The bookkeeper collapsed with a blank look on his face.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYou see what I had to do?\u00a0\u2014\u00a0Kill my men,\u201d Isamu announced, directing his\u00a0hostilities\u00a0at\u00a0the Tohno leader. \u201cI want the serum,\u00a0now<\/i>!<\/em>\u201d\u00a0he demanded.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Isamu aimed his pistol at Gaku and as he did\u00a0a thunderous timpani of helicopters\u00a0swept low over the building, followed by a series of nearby explosions. A loud, shrill squeal, like that of an oversized firework\u2019s rocket whistling on ascension, passed over the building and was followed by a loud explosion in the parking area. Another rocket whistle followed near street level and struck the lower part of the building. A third came seconds apart from the last whistle and struck the upper part of the building.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The intense, violent blast shook the structure and knocked everyone in the suite to the floor. Gaku, his\u00a0bodyguard Shimizu, Chief Yazawa, and one underling took advantage of the\u00a0event and bolted for the door. As Murakami got his footing,\u00a0he grabbed someone\u2019s dropped pistol and ran\u00a0too.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Kudo\u00a0Clan\u00a0First Lieutenant Kimura\u00a0saw\u00a0his nemesis\u00a0scramble by, and as\u00a0Murakami passed,\u00a0Kimura snatched up his dislodged pistol and fired from the floor; the bullet struck the casement as\u00a0the Tohno lieutenant\u00a0made it through the archway.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cGet them,\u201d\u00a0Saito\u00a0yelled at his men, as he began to rise.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As\u00a0Matsumoto ushered\u00a0his boss\u00a0out the door,\u00a0Saito, Kurosawa and Matsui followed. Kimura\u00a0sat up, holstered his pistol, and then picked up his sword. As he began to rise,\u00a0the\u00a0shrill whistle of a rocket bore\u00a0down on the suite. The room exploded.\u00a0The shockwave\u00a0from the blast launched\u00a0Kimura through the doorway and into the hall, slamming him against the far wall. He landed\u00a0near dead Hamasaki.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Saito\u00a0had not seen his first lieutenant blown into the\u00a0hallway, but\u00a0had turned in time to see him flop to the floor. He rushed to his aid.\u00a0\u201cAre you okay?\u201d he asked.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m fine,\u201d Kimura assured him, trying to catch his breath.\u00a0\u201cDon\u2019t let Tohno get away because of me.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Saito moved\u00a0several feet\u00a0down the hall but turned back.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He\u00a0waved him off. \u201cBoss, please. Go.\u00a0I\u2019ll follow.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Kimura\u00a0staggered to his feet, and then\u00a0stepped\u00a0to the penthouse doorway and looked\u00a0in. The bright light of a hovering Apache helicopter swept\u00a0across the destroyed room\u00a0revealing\u00a0that\u00a0his two\u00a0underlings and the remainder of Tohno Clan\u00a0were\u00a0dead.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
